Lisa's Story

Lisa recently came to ANGLICARE after separating from her partner of 18 years. Unfortunately she is not receiving any child maintenance for their four children, one of whom has a disability. Lisa’s partner sold the family home leaving her and the children homeless.

One of Lisa’s friends has provided the family with somewhere to live, however Lisa is finding it difficult to rely on the generosity of her friend and needs a permanent place for her children to grow up. All of their belongings are in storage until they can find a place of their own. This is draining Lisa’s finances as she has to pay monthly storage costs.

Having spent the last two months homeless, Lisa is on a priority housing list however it could still take three to six months for the family to be allocated housing. In the meantime Lisa is transporting her four children 60km to school each day in order to maintain a sense of stability in their lives. The price of fuel makes these daily trips very costly.

Lisa’s son, Samuel, has specialist appointments and speech therapy and the cost of these visits is a further strain on Lisa’s already stretched finances.

Whilst the issues with maintenance are being sorted out, Lisa is unable to get any extra assistance and as a result she is struggling to provide for her family. She is trying to save money for a bond and four weeks rent in advance so that she can provide her children with a place to call home.

ANGLICARE has been able to help Lisa with her electricity and phone bills and has provided the family with food. However with Christmas just around the corner, Lisa is worried about how she will provide presents for her children on Christmas morning.

Through the support of the community, ANGLICARE will be able to help many families like Lisa’s to have a special Christmas together and ensure that her children have presents to unwrap on Christmas morning.

Jenny and Dave's Story

Jenny is the mother of five great kids. Unfortuantely the past few years have been extremely difficult for Jenny and her family. Around six years ago Jenny’s husband Dave was diagnosed with a genetic disease which left him blind. As a result he was unable to continue working in the same job. He now works in a disability workshop, earning $6.50 an hour, to supplement his  disability pension.

The significant drop in income has meant that the family struggles on a daily basis. Jenny and Dave are doing the best they can to provide for the needs of their children and to maintain some stability in their lives but sometimes the pressures of providing for five children on such a meagre income become too hard. On occasions they need assistance to pay their electricity and gas bills and with Christmas fast approaching there is added stress on their finances.

Like all parents, Jenny and Dave want their children’s Christmas to be special however it is a constant struggle to afford their day to day needs, without the added expense of Christmas presents for five children.

Through the generosity of our supporters, ANGLICARE is able to ease their burden during the hard times. This Christmas we will be able to provide families like Jenny and Dave’s with gifts for their children and Essentials Cards to buy some festive Christmas food.  Every year, the families that we support thank us for the toys and food and tell us that they would not be able to manage without the generous support of the community.
